What is I-Pass

I-Pass is accepted in Illinois, Chicago Skyway and Indiana along with E-ZPass

I-Pass is the electronic toll collection system for payment of toll on Illinois toll roads and bridges. I-Pass, like E-ZPass on the east coast toll roads, is an electronic tag that you can install in your windshield to zoom through electronic toll gantries. You can use I-Pass tag on toll roads that accept E-ZPass.

Using I-Pass on Illinois toll roads and bridges offers a 50% discount to drivers using the Illinois I-Pass on state toll roads. Ordering an I-Pass transponder requires an initial $30 for the first transponder. Vehicles without a transponder tag attached pay the cash toll rate.

Where can I use my I-Pass

The I-Pass can be used on all Illinois toll roads and bridges. Apart from this you can also use it on the Indiana Toll Road, the Chicago Skyway and in 17 other states that use the E-ZPass system.

The I-Pass costs $30 to obtain along with a refundable deposit of $10. A further amount of $20 is to be deposited towards prepaid tolls. The minimum balance is $20 and the account auto-replenishes 10% of the average monthly usage or a minimum of $10. There is no annual fee for the I-Pass.

How do I open an I-Pass Account

You can open a new I-Pass account online at the Illinois tollway website[1] or on the phone at (800-824-7277) 1-8000-UC-IPASS (800-824-7277), in person at a customer service center and one of the 200 Jewel-Osco locations in Northern Illinois or by mail.  To open an I-Pass account, you need to:

  • Open online as www. illinoistollway.com
  • Purchase a transponder from one of the I-Pass partners, or
  • From an authorized I-Pass customer service center, or
  • At an Illinois Tollway office
  • Once the transponder is purchased, it is to be activated . Call a toll-free number to activate the transponder by providing your address, phone, license, debit/credit card numbers and vehicle information.
  • For opening the account a minimum balance of $20 is required and a $10 refundable deposit for each transponder tag that is bought.

Customers can visit any Jewel-Osco, Road Ranger or I-PASS Customer Service Center to pick up their I-PASS today! All transponders require activation, which can be done online or at any Illinois Tollway service location.

Place your I-Pass adjacent to your windshield's rear-view mirror, about one to one-and-a-half inches from the top of the windshield, and about one to two inches to the left or right of the rear-view mirror.

Alternatively, you can use PrePass or PrePass plus services for toll payments on Illinois toll roads and bridges.

  • Commercial and fleet vehicles can use PrePass a weigh station enabling vehicles to be pre-screened and bypass the weigh station without a need to stop. PrePass does not support toll payment.
  • PrePass Plus comes with additional features of payment of electronic toll along with all the features of PrePass. The payment can be done at E-ZPass and I-Pass electronic toll collection facilities.

I-Pass for Government Fleet

Government fleet vehicles may be eligible for an exempt I-Pass account in accordance to Illinois Toll Highway Act.
